Visa on Arrival

Most nationalities receive visas upon arrival. Citizens of African Union, Commonwealth, or La Francophonie member states enjoy visa-free entry for 30 days. East African Community members receive free passes valid for 6 months. Specific countries including Angola, Ghana, and Mauritius receive 90 days visa-free upon arrival.

Kigali International Airport serves as Rwanda's main international gateway. RwandAir operates direct routes from Brussels, London, Johannesburg, Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and other major African hubs.

Tips to Navigate Kigali

Here are some tips that will help you better navigate the local culture and enjoy your time in Rwanda.

Currency

The unit of currency is the Rwandan Franc (RWF). Exchange rates are subject to fluctuation. Central bank rates can be found on the National Bank of Rwanda website.

Banking Services

Banking hours are from 09:00 to 18:00 on weekdays and from 09:00 to 15:00 on Saturdays. Banking amenities are available at all commercial banks. Most banks have cash dispensing machines accepting Visa, MasterCard, and Cirrus.

Local Time

The time in Rwanda is GMT+2. The time zone is Central African Time (CAT).

Plastic Bags

As part of an environmental protection policy, plastic bags are not allowed in Rwanda. Passengers entering Kigali International Airport, or any other border posts with plastic bags, are required to discard them and are supplied with an environmentally friendly alternative.

Electric Supply

The electricity supply in Rwanda is 220/240V AC. You are advised to bring your own round, two-prong adapter, and transformer for 110V AC.

Telecommunications

The two Rwandan mobile telecommunication service providers available are MTN and Airtel. Mobile telephone service providers also provide a gateway to the Internet using GPRS, 3G, and 4G. Cell phone SIM cards are widely available.

Business & Shopping Hours

Public offices open from 09:00 to 17:00, while businesses open from 09:00 to 22:00, Monday to Friday. Weekend business hours range between 09:00 and 22:00.
